consume the Word
I am no Bible scholar. Woops, I suppose that this another disclosure statement. I wonder if that says something about myself... not that I am not a Bible scholar, but that I start multiple blog posts with disclosure statements. Ha!
Even though I am not a Bible scholar. I can study the Word. I love it! Today I have found myself back into the Psalms. A place of promise and solitude for this journey of ours. Specifically today I am in Psalm 119. I know there is no way that I can pick through the whole thing today, because I am finding myself completely stuck within the first two or three pages of it! However my basic synopsis of what I have read through is this, "obedience to God's Word is the key to life." Here are a few things that keep jumping out off the pages to me (New Living Translation):
Joy. "Joyful are those who obey his laws" (vs 2)
Purity. "How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your Word." (vs 9)
Advice. "Your laws please me; they give me my advice." (vs 24)
Revival. "I lie in the dust; revive me by your Word." (vs 25)
Encouragement. "I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your Word." (vs 28)
Understanding. "I will pursue your commands, for you expand my understanding." (vs 32)
Life. "Give me life through your Word." (vs 37)
Freedom. "I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments." (vs 45)
Comfort. "I meditate on your age-old regulations; O Lord, they comfort me." (vs 52)
Crazy good, huh? I guess that is why David wrote, "taste and see that the Lord is good" in Psalm 34:8 NLT. Consume the Word. Why wouldn't you? Pizza and ice cream (or any other scrumptious favorite you can imagine) cannot give joy, purity, advice, revival, encouragement, understanding, life, freedom and comfort. Nothing you can consume can do this for you. Nothing except the Word.
And more than 340 million people are living and dying without it.
