cutting off the giants' heads
1 Samuel 17:38-40 NLT
"Then Saul gave David his own armor—a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine."
I was struck by this passage the other day during a Bible study about spiritual warfare... David went into battle against a giant with only a shepherd's staff, a sling and five stones. From the outside perspective he was totally (and I mean totally!) unprepared. The Holy Spirit's gently nudged my heart while reviewing this passage of Scripture. I felt at complete peace regarding our "unpreparedness" for PNG. Let me see if I can explain...
I have had a tendency. A very strong one in fact. A tendency to fear not having the stuff that we need (material things) that Wycliffe tells us we need to get together for PNG. I want to be ready. (What mother wouldn't wanna make sure her babies have the things they need though?) Recently I have feared if we were really ready since we didn't have "the stuff".
This passage gave me complete freedom from this fear. David may have looked unprepared (kinda like how we look from the outside) but he wasn't (and neither are we)!! God had given Him all the prep work he needed to defeat Goliath. He fought bears and lions (oh my). See, I have been allowing Satan to place doubts into my head regarding our preparedness. This TRUTH gave me renewed freedom from those lies. God had prepared us for this task. The "stuff" is just that "stuff". The real work has been completed...
Verse 46 (David speaking to Goliath):
"Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head."
Our battle is won. We are in His will. His provisions have been made. They are lined up and in order... we just have to step forward one day at a time... cutting off each giant's head along the way. :)
Isn't He grand? *sigh*
